Annual DRAKKAR Meeting
Laboratoire des
Ecoulements Géophysiques et Industriels,
Salle du Conseil
Grenoble, 25-26 January 2007
Last update: 15 February 2007
INTRODUCTION
The DRAKKAR project has set up a
hierarchy of ocean model
configurations, the aim of which is to serve the scientific objectives
of the
participating research groups (DRAKKAR science plan, at http://www.ifremer.fr/lpo/drakkar/index.htm).
The objectives of this
DRAKKAR meeting are:
i) to review the technical progresses achieved on
this hierarchy of models and the scientific results obtained,
ii) to analyse
and update the appropriateness of
the present hierarchy of models for the scientific objectives of the
various
groups,
iii) to
establish a coordinated plan for the
development/evolution of the hierarchy of models and the experiments to
carry
out for the coming year.
OVERVIEW OF MEETING
SESSIONS
The 2007 January meeting is therefore organized in 3 sessions:
1 - Report Session
This session comprises a series of reports from different groups on
scientific
and technical advancements relative to the various model
configurations.
2-
Results session
This
session will discuss the
interannual
experiments, with a focus on the comparison between the 2 global
1/4°
simulations, G70 and KAB001. An important objective of this session is
to
identify strong and weak points of these simulations in order to
identify where
improvements are required (weak points), and where publications can be
envisaged (strong points).
3 - Planning Session
This session is dedicated to
the definition of the work plan for 2007.
Two
major axes will be discussed: the continuation of global simulations
and the
development of the high resolution applications (the 1/12° North
Atlantic model
and the AGRIF applications). The session will start with a brief review
of the
scientific objectives of the various groups. It will identify
developments to
be carried out in 2007, and will establish a coordinated development
and
simulations plan for 2007.

PLANING SESSION (introduction)
This
session is dedicated to the definition of the work plan for 2007.
17:05-18:30: Presentations
plans from each group (<10 mn each)
Every group
will have the opportunity to present very briefly their projects
for 2007.
In addition to the Project Team
Members (LEGI/LPO/LOCEAN,
IFM-Geomar,
NOC, Reading),
In particular we invite associate
scientists participating to the meeting (Paul
Meyrs, You Lulu,
James
Orr, G.
Roullet, Didier
Swingedouw,
...) to present a few slides

PLANING SESSION (9:00 - 13:00)
9:00 -
10:00 : Global Configuration
Define the planning
for global
model simulations, including the new ORCA1 configuration developed in
the UK,
and draft the definition of the coordinated work plan for 2007. This
will
include work plan with regional configurations which aim at improving
the
global model (such as the Indonesian through flow configuration or the
Antarctic configurations).
10:00 -10:50
High resolution configurations
-
Results from the Mercator North Atlantic 1/12° NATL12 (20 mn, Bernard Barnier)
- Plans with AGRIF
application in the NE
Atlantic (10 mn,
Virginie Thierry)
- Plans with NATL12 (10 mn,
Virginie Thierry)
10:50-11:10 Coffee break
11:10-15:30
General Discussion
General
discussion on high resolution configuration and raft
of the 2007 coordinated work plan for high resolution configurations.
Important issues are:
- Hindcast and sensitivity experiments with
ORCA025 and NATL12 to carry out in 2007
- Working
together:
Common
data format
Data exchange
Joint analysis of experiments
Update and distribution of Drakkar model
configurations

Morning (start at 9:00)
Snowshoe-hike/cross-country
ski who'll stay
overnight in Grenoble.
We had snow,
sun, wind and cold weather (-10°C), but we could manage without
snowshoes.
Iit was fun and beautifull (as usual), although the picnic was short.
