OBJECTIVES OF THE DRAKKAR WORKSHOP
1) To review the scientific and technical progresses achieved with the Drakkar hierarchy of model configurations, with as main objective to identify its strengths and weaknesses.
2)
To share expertise regarding "working with NEMO based configurations"
3) To analyse the appropriateness of the present hierarchy of models for the scientific projects (including MyOcean) of the various groups.
4) To identify and prioritise model improvements and new developments that DRAKKAR would like to see implemented in 2010.

5) To think about the long-term outlook of these developments (4 to 10 years time frame).

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW (see complete programme below, pdf file)
1 - Results Session (Monday 1 February)
SHORT presentations (10 to 15 mn max) of interannual and sensitivity experiments carried out with the hierarchy of configurations. Emphasis should be given to results that :
- illustrate and rationalise the sensitivity of the model solution to parameterisations, resolution and atmospheric forcing.
- identify strong and weak points of these simulations in order to suggest where improvements are required (weak points), and where results yield publications (strong points).
The session should clearly identify directions of improvements of the current and future Drakkar model configurations, to prepare the Planning Session.

2 - Project Session (Tuesday 2 February)
2.1  Group projects: Presentations (5mn to 10 mn) of the 2010 projects of the participating groups, and of the DRAKKAR configuration they plan to use.
- Status of NEMO3.2 and evolution in 2010
2.2  DRAKKAR hierarchy of models: discussions for each configuration
- Session on ORCA025 and lower resolution configurations (joint between DRAKKAR&MYOCEAN): Improvements to the configurations,  coordinated sensitivity experiments, coupling with sea ice models (LIM3, CICE, ...), biogeochemical models  (PISCES, MEDUSA, ...), atmospheric models, ocean reanalyses (ESSC, MERCATOR,...)
- Session on AGRIF: status and plans for the next 2 years

- Session on ORCA12 (joint DRAKKAR&MYOCEAN): Status and coordinated plans with this configurations  for the next 2 years.
2.3  General discussion:
- Improvements required both for climate applications (IPCC, coupled simulations, long reanalysis) as well as short term forecasts and reanalysis of the recent years
- Strategy for coordinated activities in 2010 (DRAKKAR and MyOcean)

3 - Long term outlook and technical sessions (Wednesday 3 February - until 4 pm)
Long term outlook for DRAKKAR (4-10 years)

- Short presentation by each group about long-term perspectives and evolution in their modelling activities,

- Main obstacles to overcome (funding, resources, technical problems).

- Discussion: can a collective strategy help us address these issues?

Technical sessions (in parallel, and possibily in parrallel with the "long term outlook" session)

- NEMO (with Rachid)

- AGRIF (with Laurent)

- ORCA12 (with Jean Marc and Claude)
- Exchange expertise in "working with NEMO", including diagnostics
- Other issues (data base access, web site and outreach, long term outlook).
