DRAKKAR 2009 Annual Workshop

Jean Kuntzmann Laboratory Amphitheater
Saint Martin d'Hères Campus, Grenoble

11-13 February 2009

New: The Meeting report is availabale here

OBJECTIVES OF THE DRAKKAR MEETING

i) The first objective is to review the scientific and technical progresses achieved on the Drakkar hierarchy of model configurations. Considering the large number of 50 year long experiments carried out with the ORCA configurations, it seems of primary interest to rationalise and understand the sensitivity of the model hierarchy to forcings, parameterisations and resolution, and to use these results to define directions of improvements of our model configurations.

ii) The second objective is to analyse the appropriateness of the present hierarchy of models for the scientific objectives of the various groups, and to define as clearly as possible what we expect in the future from our cooperation.

iii) The third objective is to establish a coordinated work plan for the improvements and the new-developments needed by our hierarchy of models, and the definition of the experiments that should be carried out in 2009 in a coordinated way.

OVERVIEW OF MEETING SESSIONS

The 2009 meeting is organized in 3 sessions:

1 - Results Session
This session will adress the first objective. A series of presentations will present results from interannual and sensitivity experiments carried out with the hierarchy of configurations. Emphasis should be given to results that :
- illustrate and rationalise the sensitivity of the model solution to parameterisations, resolution and atmospheric forcing.
- identify strong and weak points of these simulations in order to suggest where improvements are required (weak points), and where publications can be envisaged  (strong points).

The session should clearly identify directions of improvements of the current Drakkar model configurations, to prepare the Planning Session.

2 - Project Session
This session will address the second objective.
- It will start with presentations of the projects of the participating groups.
- The appropriateness/relevance of the current model configurations to the scientific objectives that we want to carry out in the next 3 to 4 years should be discussed, especially if we intend to address climate change issues, such as the ocean carbon cycle, and other scientific questions that require that our circulation models be coupled with biological/biochemical models, or with atmopheric models. To foster the discussion of this latter evolution, presentations reviewing the latest release of NEMO will be given. MyOCEAN and its ovelap with DRAKKAR activities woll be discussed.

3 - Planning Session
This session is dedicated to the definition of the work plan for 2009. A general discussion will identify
/prioritise which improvements and new-developments of the model hierarchy need
to be carried out in 2009, and will establish a coordinated plan
for development and simulations in 2009.
We should also have a broader/farther outlook.
